I’m excited to announce the release of WhisperClock, a new audio-first utility and accessibility app built exclusively for the Pebble Time 2 (Emery). This app employs the new speaker and touchscreen on the PT2.
Timekeeping should be accessible in any situation. Whether you are navigating a visual impairment, keeping your eyes safely on the road during a commute, or checking the time in the middle of the night without affecting your circadian rhythms with blue light, WhisperClock delivers the exact time directly to your ear through spoken audio clips.
I’m still refining it (I want to record some new clips this week). There are also some “beta” features that can be enabled. I’d love some feedback on the app. I have some Chinese clips recorded already and will implement them soon but any other languages would be considered too. Thank you!
Seems there might be missing sound files, just tried to have it say the time, it’s 21:32, time is in 24h format, with “it’s” enabled, and I got “It’s thirty-two”.
Sounds useful. Can’t get it to work. Set to “Always speak” and “Tap Glass”. On phone it says the app keeps starting and stopping. It seems to have caused the same update to 4.11.0 to trigger several times now.
I’m giving up.
Removed the app. Watch went to QR code and couldn’t get out of it. Loading PebbleOS v4.11.0 again.
…and again. Don’t know if it’s coincidence or I need to factory reset my watch or what. Hope this is just my bad luck and this behaviour is just on my device.
Weird, I’ve never had such issues, sounds like you may have some faulty hardware…? I’m also on 4.11.0 and I can’t seem to replicate your results. The beta features are highly experimental and I’m still testing them so no guarantees on stability or functionality. Does the app work fine if you disable the beta settings and use quick launch?
Happened to have the new version play at 12:00, it said “twelve hundred”.
Also it seems it’s messing with the backlight, it turns it off when speaking and then back on and that’s probably what caused my backlight to stay stuck on until I rebooted the watch.
Beta features don’t seem to work for me either, or I don’t understand how to set them up.
Thanks everyone for your feedback so far! I’m glad others are trying the app.
Are you on 24-hour time when it says “twelve hundred”? If so, that is the correct way to say it. If in 12-hour time if it is noon, the app should actually say “noon” and “midnight” if 12am. But I haven’t tested that for awhile so maybe it broke in this version of the app. I did see an error when it is midnight in 24-hr time, it says “its zero hundred, hundred hours” which makes no sense, so I’ll fix that…
I’m actually working on some colloquialisms and customizations that should cover pretty much every English way of speaking the time. But that might need some fine tuning before rolling out. Recordings are made though…
The backlight not turning on is actually by design, I wanted the app to speak to me in the middle of the night so I didn’t want it lighting up the room or messing with my night vision. However, if people want the backlight to be on during speaking, I can make a toggle for the backlight being on or off while speaking. I’m not sure about the backlight staying on after though, I haven’t experienced this myself but I will look into it.
The beta features are pretty experimental. The idea is that they should record a gesture then recognize it when it is repeated. It worked really well with the phone accelerometer and emulator, but not so well on the actual watch so I’ve pushed it to the beta features.
Glad to hear it, I’m working on adding some localizations and modes and refining the sound clips as well as some other goodies. The beta features I’m still struggling with getting to work properly.
