Pebble Index 01 - AMA

Good day! where can you see what languages are supported, this is something I would like to know before buying.

The Core App uses Cactus STT for transcription using the Whisper models. This is the list of languages the multi-language models support: Supported Languages | Whisper API Docs

I can’t speak to how well the other languages work.

Thanks Flynn! That’s correct. On top of that, our cloud transcription option (wispr flow) also supports 100 languages, which is annoyingly doesn’t have a list online for some reason!

Thanks to your team for releasing the 3D printable files, wearing one now to see how it fits and feels while getting on with day-to-day activities.

You mentioned that the app will be able to alert users as to when the battery is running low.

Can the mobile app provide an ongoing measurement of remaining battery life throughout the life of the device?

I am thinking, I have a Pebble Time 2 on order and if the Index battery is taking more of a hit than expected I could adjust my behaviour to rely on the watch for the same functions more often to make the Index last longer.

Also, do you have any thoughts on offering incentives for ongoing purchases of the Index as the batteries run out?

For example, return the Index for recycling and receive a discount on a replacement?

It would be great to understand more about any potential recycling scheme, like which parts of the device could be reused/recycled and how.

I really like the functionality and the form (especially now I am wearing a replica), and being able to throw it on without charging (for years!) is a positive. I am just trying to work through any remaining concerns regarding the single use nature of the device.

Thanks for all of the useful feedback provided so far.

@eric

Yes, it does, and it will remind you roughly a month before the battery runs out.

Thanks @Flynn, I really should have found those replies myself! :man_facepalming:

Great to hear you can monitor the battery life, that will really help make the most of the device.

Fingers crossed for a good recycling/discount scheme for repeat purchases! :crossed_fingers:

I thought of some more questions while wearing the replica throughout the day:

Does the Index only connect to your phone after you click and record, and it has something to transfer?

If that is the case, I assume recording a note when your phone is not in range may increase battery usage while it retries the connection over a given period?

How does the device stand up to heat?

Do you see operating in hotter conditions affecting battery life?

@eric Thanks again for being so responsive!

Yes

yes it retries for 30 minutes. this uses a very small amount of power. But FYI Index 01 is designed to be used with a phone, it is not designed as a permanent standalone recorder

No.

Perhaps a silly question, but what exactly does “our sizes are different than […] other rings” supposed to mean?

We will ask everyone to measure their ring size, either by ordering an Index 01 sizer kit or 3D printing the kit, because our sizes are different than Oura or other rings

I was planning on relying on the measurements in the provided image. Presumably you’re not saying that those mm measurements are wrong, but are just commenting on the ~0.1mm error you seem to have compared to (what the internet claims is) North american ring sizes.

This (https://repebble.com/index01-carousel/index01-dimensions.png) from Pebble Index 01 - External Memory For Your Brain contains the correct measurements. There is no ISO standard for ring size unfortunately. Everyone seems to go their own way.

@Eric - can you please provide some guidance as to how to configure the Index01 (via the Pebble App?)? I’m specifcally interested in adding my own MCP hooks. The current ‘MCP & Tool Settings’ list four “builtin_*” items (clicking on those only asks if you’d like to delete them), and adding a new item simply prompts for a name and URI.

How does the (local) LLM understand, for example, my Index01-sourced prompt beginning “New task: …” should be directed to my custom MCP?

I tried grepping the mobile app source, but the patterns “index” and “ring” match waaay too much cruft…

Thank you for any guidance/docs you can supply.

Good question! We’re still playing around with it. We’ll publish instructions when Index 01 begins shipping.

Hi Eric, thanks for the AMA. I hope I haven’t overlooked the answers I’m looking for.

  • Will the Index 01 work with the Light Phone 3? I am considering getting one as a weekend phone.
  • Can I remove the ring with soap, hand lotion or cooking oil and clean it afterwards under rinsing water?
  • Do I have to press and hold the button to record?
  • What is the max length of one recording session before it automatically stops? Can I instantly continue a second session by holding the button again? Usually my train of thoughts are longer than 5 minutes – so I need the ring to be capable of recording multiple sessions in quick succession.
  • What’s the max of recorded minutes before the ring needs to be synced with the smartphone? What happens if the storage runs full before synchronizing? Will the old recordings automatically be deleted after sync?

Thanks for taking your time. Best regards

Alex

Nope! I love LP3 but it doesn’t run android apps

Mild soap and rinsing under water is ok!

Yes

2 minutes

5 minutes

It loops over and starts overwriting the first recordings

  • I went and got my fingers sized at a jewelry shop today, and it seems like my perfect size is halfway between your size 12 and 13. If the Index is popular enough, will you expand the size selection? Or is it fairly locked in?
  • Do you have any audio samples? You mentioned the mic is bad (it’s a very small device, after all) but the STT models still work OK with it. Is it reliable in a shower, on a windy day, next to traffic, in a bar? I’d love to feed the audio into the frontier STT models and compare against the on-device one.

We have no plans currently to offer any sizes other than 6-13. If you are in between sizes, I recommend ordering a larger one then using these Ring Adjusters Amazon.com: Smart Ring Size Adjuster - 120Pcs Invisible Fit for Oura Ring Gen 4/3, Samsung Galaxy Ring, Ultra Human Ring AIR, RingConn 2/1, Amazfit Helio - Loose Ring Sizing Kit, Comfortable & Discreet Accessorie : Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry

Yes as long as you hold the ring up to your mouth to speak, it works in all those situations. It’s tuned for an audio source several centimeters away, everything else is basically inaudible.
