Pebble 2 Duo stuttered to death

Summary: my Pebble 2 Duo became laggy, and now after a factory reset I cannot set it up. Maybe bricked?

I got my new white Pebble 2 Duo a few months ago and I’ve been using it with the Pebble iOS app through Testflight. About a week ago I noticed that it was exhibiting strange behavior about 50% of the time:

  • Animations were 1 fps slideshows
  • Sometimes button presses were not registered
  • Sometimes it failed to vibrate when receiving a notification, and sometimes it vibrated for far too long instead

I didn’t have much time to troubleshoot for the first couple of days of this. Eventually, I had time to troubleshoot, where I:

  • Checked to make sure it was updated to the latest firmware version (it was)
  • Uninstalled most of the apps I had on it except for a few essentials (checklist, my favorite watch face)

These steps did not fix it, so the next day I manually shut it down through the watch settings a couple of times to try the old “turn it off and turn it on again trick” which also did not fix it.

The next day I tried removing all apps and reverting to the stock watch face. This also did not fix it.

Today, I factory reset it through the Pebble app, which brought me to the QR code screen on the watch. Now, when I attempt to add it back to the Pebble app, it says “Connecting” forever and doesn’t actually set up the watch. Troubleshooting steps I have tried at this stage include:

  • Uninstalling and re-installing the Pebble app through Testflight
  • Installing the Pebble app via the App Store
  • Force-restarting the watch by holding the back button for a long time

Something minor and weird I noticed was that shortly after factory resetting it there were some blinking lines near the bottom of the screen around the “Pebble ####” text that have gone away and are not coming back.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance recovering my Pebble 2 Duo. Thank you.

Thanks for letting us know! Did you submit a bug report in the Pebble mobile app?

If you haven’t submitted a bug report, please attach some photos/videos when you do. If you already did submit a bug report, please go back into it and attach photos/videos. Thanks!

First off, make sure you’ve unpaired the watch through your phone’s system settings as well as through the Pebble app. The app won’t see the watch if it’s still paired in the system settings.

One more thing you could try is holding down the back, up, and select buttons to reset to the recovery firmware. It’s essentially a separate smaller copy of the firmware. If you’re able to pair through that, then you’ll be able to update to proper firmware after.

Wow, thank you for the rapid replies!

@eric and Trevor (I can’t @ mention more than 2 users in a post as a new user) : I did not submit a bug report through the app. I assumed that after having reinstalled the app and reset my watch that there wouldn’t be any logs worthwhile to submit, and I do not have any pictures/videos of the stuttering in action.

@Flynn : Your hint to forget the Pebble via the system Bluetooth settings worked! I appear to be up and running again.

I will put some apps on it and see if the stuttering comes back and report back in this thread. Do you all think submitting a bug report via the app is still warranted if the stuttering does not return? In any case, I will let you all know if it resurfaces; I want to give it a while to see if the problem is actually solved or not.

Glad it’s working again. Yes, please report a bug in the app as soon as it happens, with pictures or video, ideally. Thanks.

And thanks to Flynn for the quick help!!

Just updating the thread to say that the issue hasn’t happened again since the factory reset two days ago.
