Just had a random thought while thinking about how watchfaces work versus apps.
With the Pebble Time 2, touch is cool for tapping functions, but honestly, a lot of us still prefer using physical buttons to save battery and keep things snappy.
Right now, if you want to tap or interact with data on your watchface, you have to code a separate “visual twin” app and map it to a quick-launch button. But that means maintaining two layouts and dealing with that awkward transition when the app boots up.
What if we could map a quick-launch setting to the watchface itself and give it a button-driven interactive mode?
Here’s kind of how I picture it working:
-
Hit the quick-launch button while on your watchface, and it puts the watchface into an active/focused state (maybe with a subtle highlight border).
-
Up and Down buttons cycle through your widgets or do watchface functions.
-
Select clicks or toggles whatever is currently highlighted (like changing weather units or checking off a quick task).
-
Back drops you right back to the normal passive clock face.
Why this would be awesome:
-
Zero touch required: Keeps battery life amazing because you aren’t waking up touch sensors or running separate app processes.
-
No duplicate code: Developers wouldn’t have to build clone apps just to make glanceable data interactive.
-
Great for button-only devices too: It brings that modern “tap complication” vibe to watches that don’t have touchscreens.
Would love to hear if something like this is even possible or if it’s too deep in the OS architecture.
