Pebblekit V2 will be the way to do companion apps in the future. It looks like there will be initial support for Pebblekit V2 in the next app release: Initial support for the Pebblekit2 by matejdro · Pull Request #26 · coredevices/mobileapp · GitHub
You don’t need your app to be published, though sideloading on iOS is kind of a pain. I don’t think there’s any support for a Pebblekit V2 iOS SDK. Not sure if that’s something that’s planned for the future, either.
