Updating old watch faces

I’m working on an updated version of an older watch face, MLB Live Face. I’m about 98% or closer. Cleaning up nits at this point but it’s fairly functional and updated for all Pebble platforms. Afterwards, publishing which brings me to a question. Can I update the original author’s efforts? There is a GitHub and I could make a pull request but seems the code has not been updated since 2016. Or should I publish this as a new effort with a new GUID? I’d like to give kudos to the original author. But mostly, I’d like to see if I can breathe life back into some of these seemly abandoned watch faces and apps. Not looking to steal someone’s work.

It’s a good question. I’ve been thinking about making a ‘Forks’ list in the appstore, so you could link your new app to an older app. I think the best practice would be to change the name so it’s not exactly the same as what the person made, and to make it very clear that you’ve forked someone else’s old code. There are many apps on the App Store that are derivatives of other open source apps, so that’s fine. You could also do a PR! They might be around still

Definitely open a PR. I’d give it maybe a week for them to respond. If they don’t, I’d publish the new app under a similar name like Eric mentioned and link the original in the description. (Maybe “original rame” 2, or “original name” UPDATED)

I’m definitely opening a PR. It’s the least I can do. If there’s no action, then I’ll update the GUID and update the name. In the description, I would attribute the original author.
