Having worn a pebble since forever, I’m used to many emojis just showing up as squares. Now that development has resumed is there is a possibly to add support for more emojis or clean up the random squares that show up sometimes around special characters?

It’s bad enough to get that occasional square symbol, but just now I got a notification on my PT that included about 160! I would think that it is possible to just not display them.
So honestly, what is the technical issue with this in 2026?
Some basic smileys and the 
is shown on the PT2 but pretty much everything is a square.
Not really a technical limitation, just that each emoji has to be hand-drawn or otherwise sourced.
Existing emojis are listed here, along with instructions on how to submit PRs to add more: PebbleOS EMOJI.LICENSE.txt, and Rebbble Emojis.
Each emoji has a small and large png image, then those are built into the pbf font files that PebbleOS ships with.
There is work being done to expand emoji support, hop in the discord in the #firmware channel to see what is happening.

Relatedly, even though I downloaded the Japanese language pack, Japanese text is only properly rendering in the notification headers for Japanese emails sent to my Gmail. The preview of the body is all squares.

This sounds like a bug. Could you send a bug report in through the Pebble Core app?
