Pebble Index 01 - AMA

Hey Flynn!

returns

Drop it in the mail, basically just envelope back to us. We do not cover the shipping.

Plan (still TBD) is to recycle the stainless steel and throw away the dead batteries.

firmware

Firmware is not open source. I licensed it from my friend, it’s his software.

Hey Bary - I don’t know what a Gem is, could you share a link?

I’m sure it’s theoretically possible! But the two pieces of stainless steel are sealed with glue (for water resistance) so it would be very hard - 10 I think.

It does support Japanese! It support 99 languages. Full list coming in future.

Hey Jolly

  1. Phone app software fully open! You can remix however you want. Yes, you can use the Index 01 as an input for your Pebble apps

  2. 160 newtons

  3. We will be doing beta tests! Not sure when yet

The Pebble app already supports on-device local speech recognition → Go to Pebble App → Settings → Voice recognition

  2. Yes! that’s the plan
  3. Nope! it’s not a BT headset
  4. Good question - I wrote that up on the blog Meet Pebble Index 01 - External Memory For Your Brain | rePebble Blog and in the Tick Talk video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArxhS4SQaP0

Hey SM, thanks for the note! But I don’t understand the message, perhaps you could try rephrasing it? Sorry!

Are you sure this is correct?

What’s the experience like if your phone doesn’t have an AI accelerator? I’ve never had any interest in any of that stuff before but the core features of the index look interesting. I have a Samsung Galaxy S10e that I don’t plan on upgrading any time soon. Will the voice to text work well without overheating my phone in my pocket?

Hi! It’s something like this. In our country, we love to collect gem stone. That picture just an example. There’re TON of variety of gemstone.. hmm. Or perhaps i just create holder with 3d printed filament? So i can push the gemstone to execute something (write note, etc)

Ok here is simplified message……..

With Index as a solution to a problem:-

It would be good to seek input from the pebble community on how such a device could aid in the creation of quick notes, reminders and so on. Theyve lived with this scenario for years.

Perhaps you could share your experiences over the last 12 months wearing it with a clear soup to nuts example.

Update your positioning to reflect the above

Approach the battery aspects similar to how HP position and procures INSTANT INK subscription. App could update status to Core; similar to how printer does ref ink cartridges.

Thankyou

Hi Eric! I’m really intrigued by the index ring. Not sure if it’s right for me, but I love to see unique products like this. One common point of negative feedback across Reddit, discord, etc. has been the non rechargeable battery. And while I see it as more of an engineering trade-off than a disadvantage, the reality is that folks these days just expect devices to work forever (in theory).

Would it be possible to offer a discount for repeat purchases who recycle their ring, sort of like a core charge? That might ameliorate some of the frustration in the community around e-waste and ring lifespan. Not sure if such a program would even be cost effective, but it would make me feel better about using an index if I knew there was a plan for longer than just the next year.

Second – what happens to the index product if Core devices disappears? People still have their decade old Pebble watches running, but that won’t be possible with silver-oxide batteries. Is the index meant to be a source of more continuous sustainable revenue then?

I’d be very interested in beta testing! I signed up for the preorder already.

Wondering the same, that sounds…wildly off./

  1. How’s the microphone quality compare, especially to the pebble time/timesteel/time round?

  2. Is the battery life the same between all sizes? (oura battery life varies depending on ring size)

  3. Do you forsee any issues with owning multiple indexes? Example use cases - different colors, as well as some peoples finger sizes vary a larger amount over the course of the day.

I bet with a 3d printer you could create an overmold. That’s a slick idea!

Pebble Index 01 ring size data

Ring looks neat! I can definitely respect a device that does one thing really well, and I love seeing Core carry the torch of making devices weird and different. I can’t wait to see how the handsfree button ends up integrating with apps on my Pebble watches.

My only concern is the battery problem - respect for the engineering constraints that led to this decision, but it feels bad to buy a product with an expiration date.

Hey, Eric - feature requests for an Index 02! I want to see a Tron-style lightbar that wraps around the whole band, and lights up whenever the microphone is hot, or apps could blink the light different colors to show status or alerts. That and a battery I can replace with a screwdriver - give me those, and you’ve got my $100!

What will the battery life be like if I just use the ring as a shortcut button? So no audio recording, just button presses to trigger stuff like the single / double click for music control you mentioned in the video.

How many button presses can I expect to get out of the single-use battery?

Yo!
I am mostly curious about the app. There’s now doubt I would find the index 01 useful, but the ease of use to get to get to that data when I need it will be the deciding factor.

I understand that would heavily depend on personal preferences and that the app will be open. I am just curious how you use it @eric. I guess my question is if there is transcription and then a searchable database of my notes?

I assume you’ve got a lot of things on the go, for example shipping the next batch of watches is the thing you’re spending time on, the Index 01 is secondary and then there’s some changes you want to make to PebbleOS in the future. Today, you have an idea to include in that PebbleOS update, but you may not get to it until April because of your current priorities. In April, you’re likely not going to remember you made that note on December 12, 2025. So how do you find it when you need it?

  1. Are there any plans to eventually open-source the firmware?
  2. What is the expected capacity of the battery (mAh)?
  3. What is the average current usage of the circuit when recording and transmitting?
  4. Would you consider making a model that has a replaceable battery (ex: PR230 commonly used in hearing aids)?
  5. I’m bilingual, and I often switch between languages when taking notes (by that I mean I’ll speak one note in one language, then later on in another. Not switching language mid-sentence). Is the voice recognition model able to guess which language is being spoken, so that it transcribes the voice note using the correct language?
