PT2: Speech recognition doesn't seem to work at all

My PT2, arrived today, firmware updated, freshly installed Android app.

No matter if I pick local or cloud first, or change language from auto to english, the results are nonsense for dictating a reply to messages, or using with the Home Assistant watchapps “assist” transcription, or in Checklist watchapp.

Is this meant to work yet ?
By nonsense, I mean “get cheese” comes out as “mm”

( for some reason pressing the watch middle button to end dictation also ends recording of video on my phone )

Results are a little better now.

On Voice & Dictation | Pebble Help Center it says

begin speaking when you see a red circle appear

I don’t ever see one. Are the docs wrong / not updated for PT2 yet ? Am I missing looking for something ?

The other thing I tried from there was

the microphone hole (beneath the navigation buttons on the right side) is angled towards and within 4-18" of your mouth.

which does seem to make transcription more reliable.
