When the watch is charging, the screen just says Charging, with an animation - so the only way to see how far it’s got is to look at Devices tab in the Phone’s app. I think. Happy to be proved wrong!
If you press the back button, you can navigate the watch as normal again. In the settings, you should now also see a small lightning bolt next to the battery icon.
