New Pebble PT2 user here. I have a question regarding bluetooth during night. I always turn on airplane mode on my smartphone in the evening. Is it advisable to do the same on the Pebble watch (if even possible)? Does it otherwise try the whole night to connect to the phone? Or do I not need to worry about it at all?

(Pebble Time 2 and Android phone)

If you’re actively putting your phone into airplane mode you would probably benefit from using Stand-By Mode.

When you’re not wearing the watch (it sees no movement for 30 minutes), Stand-By Mode automatically turns off Bluetooth, effectively putting the watch into airplane mode. As soon as you pick it up again and start moving, the watch detects the motion, re-enables Bluetooth, and reconnects to your phone.

You can turn it by heading (on the watch) to Settings \> System \> Stand-By Mode

That’s good to know, thanks @Trevor. But what if I keep wearing the watch (to track sleep)?

If your phone is for sure not connected to your watch, you could always turn off Bluetooth. Not to sound like your mom, but why don’t you just put on do not disturb on your phone? I used to be an airplane mode person, but God forbid something happened in the middle of the night, I want people to be able to reach me that are favor in my list.

I’d agree you probably don’t want airplane mode on at night, in case of emergency calls. Try fiddling with your phones do not disturb (or sleep) settings and the watches `Settings > Quiet Time` options. Not sure how Quiet Time handles calls at night, though. You might have to send everything immediately to voicemail except favorites or specific contacts.

Bluetooth 5+ uses a very small amount of energy. Something like 50-200x less than wifi or GSM antennas. I have BT5 sensors that log data every minute and last a year on 2x AAA’s. Most of the gains with energy consumption will come from the backlight, notification/vibration frequency, HR monitoring interval, and especially how frequently the watchface has to repaint (if it has to update every second that’s basically ~60x less efficient than once a minute).

At my age, it’s still common to have a traditional landline. 😉

I was just concerned about what the Pebble does when there’s no smartphone because of airplane mode. Whether it constantly tries to connect and keeps polling the phone.

If I understand correctly, though, that doesn’t happen, or at least it doesn’t have a significant impact on energy consumption?
